This is We Are's first Newsletter for the scholastic year of 2015-2016. Freshers' Week is now over, and it's time for a run-down of what happened and what's happening this month, especially if you haven't been able to pay us a visit at our stand.
What happened at Freshers' Week? This year, we had a theme for each day (Media, Family, Health, Sports, Youth), with posters and images set up each day relating to the themes. We also had a question for each theme that we asked people coming by to answer and put up their answers; photos of the questions and replies will be posted on Facebook to encourage people to answer and continue the discussion. There were bookmarks and information booklets for passers-by to take, and anyone who signed up this year got a member pack with our business card, the National Gay Helpline card and a DIY keychain one of our members made. We were happy to see people stop, chat with us and ask questions. We really enjoyed interacting, and we hope this was a positive experience for them as well, while we also look forward to meeting those who could not come by. You can check out our stand at our Freshers' Week photo album.
1. Our first official event in this scholastic year is our Welcome Drinks event on Friday 9th October (RSVP on Welcome Drinks FB page). Meeting time and place are provided in the event page, but this is a good opportunity for one to meet both old and new members in a relaxed setting, socialise before university stress kicks in.
2. We will also be having a meeting with members on 21st October, 1-2pm in KSU Common Room. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let us know. Anyone who is a non-member and wishes to join can fill in the membership form and pay the membership donation during the meeting.
3. We are screening a film for Halloween on Wednesday 28th October so check the event page for more info (RSVP on Halloween Film Night FB page). Dress up is optional but encouraged as we are having a Best Costume Competition with a prize. Members enter for free while anyone who is a non-member and wishes to join will have to donate 2 euros at the door, or if they would like, they can become members by filling in our membership form and paying the membership donation.
We will be planning events for November soon, so we'd appreciate any suggestions from you.
One of our aims is to provide a safe space for LGBTQQI youth and students, and the people who support them, to be themselves. This includes a secret group on facebook, only people currently in the group can see other members and posts, and to be in the group you must be added by an admin. If you would like to be added to our secret group on please send a message to any of our exec members on facebook.
For those whose membership has expired, or would like to know if it's expired and want to renew, please contact us.
We wish you all best of luck in your endeavours and we hope to see you soon,
